Do I need a solicitor to buy property in Spain?

Legally no, but practically yes. The Spanish Notary does not act in your interests, they verify the formalities of the transaction. A solicitor carries out the due diligence that protects you: checking the title, hidden debts, planning status and the contracts before you commit.

Yes. Our entire team works in English as standard. All documents are provided in both Spanish and English, and you will never be asked to sign something you have not fully understood.

Yes. A UK will does not automatically cover assets in Spain. Without a Spanish will, your family will face a significantly more complicated and expensive process to deal with your Spanish estate.

Yes. Non-residents who own property in Spain must file an annual tax return and pay imputed income tax, even if the property sits empty. If you rent it out, quarterly returns on the rental income are also required.

Quite a lot. UK nationals are now treated as non-EU residents for tax purposes, which affects inheritance tax allowances, capital gains treatment and residency rights. We advise UK clients on this every day and can walk you through what applies to your specific situation.

The NIE is the tax identification number every foreigner needs before any financial transaction in Spain: buying property, opening a bank account or signing a contract. PALS can handle the entire application on your behalf using a power of attorney, so you do not need to be physically present in Spain.
